Enya

The first time I photographed Enya

The first time I photographed Enya was way back in 1993 for Book of Days and Marble Halls. In my London Photographic Studio, Brook Mews North,Paddington. I shared this with Stylorouge.com owned by Rob O’connor. We worked there from 1986 to 1996.

I photographed Enya in Ireland

The next time I photographed Enya was in Ireland in 2001 for Wild Child,May It Be and Only Time. She is one of the gentlest and sweetest people I know and I love photographing her.

Nicky and Roma Ryan complete the team.

Nicky and Roma Ryan complete the team. With Nicky producing and Roma writing the lyrics. Together they are Enya. Here’s a quick biog from Wikipedia about her just incase you don’t know.

Biog Taken From Wikipedia

Enya (born Eithne Patricia Ní Bhraonáin on 17 May 1961), is an Irish singer, instrumentalist and composer. The media sometimes refer to her by the Anglicized name, Enya Brennan; Enya is an approximate transliteration of how Eithne is pronounced in the Donegal dialect of the Irish language.

She began her musical career in 1980, when she briefly joined her family band Clannad, before leaving to perform solo. She gained wider recognition for her music in the 1986 BBC series The Celts. Shortly afterwards, her 1988 album Watermark propelled her to further international fame and she became known for her unique sound, characterised by voice-layering, folk melodies, synthesised backdrops and ethereal reverberations.

She continued to enjoy steady success during the 1990s and 2000s; her 2000 album A Day Without Rain sold 15 million copies and she was named the world’s best selling female artist of 2001. She is Ireland’s best-selling solo musician and is officially the country’s second-largest musical export after the band U2.Her album sales stand at 70 million as of 2009,with over 26 million in album sales in the US.Her work has earned her four Grammy awards and an Academy Award nomination. She has performed in 10 languages during her career thus far.

As a musical group, Enya represents a partnership between three people: Enya herself, who composes and performs the music; Nicky Ryan, who produces the albums; and Roma Ryan, who writes the lyrics in various languages, except Gaelic, in which Enya will render the lyrics herself.

Still on with the show. Here’s a selection of my favorite photographs I’ve taken so far.

  13. Sava says:

Those are great, great photos Simon. I admire your work. I also love photography, so I’m very interested what type of camera and lenses did you use in these photo sessions? Enya looks so beautiful, amazing… (well she is anyway). However, one thing I do not like. With some photos there are just to many Photoshop corrections. Her face looks to lighten, plastic, like some doll (especially those from Clivedon House). Photos aren’t true any more. It’s so unnecessary (and that’s a sin of Photoshop :)
But that photo from Jet Studios Fulham are real masterpiece. Absolutely divine. She looks so ethereal and beautiful there, like a fairy. It would be so nice if you could post some higher resolution of that picture. You are Great Artist, Simon. I must admit, I envy you a little. Working with Enya, doing photo sessions, so many times… Priceless. God… I would give anything for that. You are very lucky guy, Simon.
Just keep up the good work.
I wish you everything the best!
